The Belize Great Blue Hole is located far from industrial sources of aerosols but is well within the region affected by silica- and clay-behavior African soil dust. African dust is deposited in the Caribbean chiefly between June and October. The error therefore serves as the giant dregs ambush where the whole sedimentation velocity is sluggish and layering is preserved due to anoxic conditions. A high tempo of atmospheric deposition relative to ordinary shallow-aquatic sedimentation should make it easier to determine and detach African soil dust from native carbonate mud. If all goes as intended, these cores will provide the centerpiece of a revise designed at determining the geologic record of dust deposition over the past few thousand years. 🙂
